By renting a kayak, you agree to comply with these protocols and acknowledge the inherent risks of kayaking.

Safety Guidelines

  1. Pre-Ride Inspection: Before each use, inspect the kayak for any visible damage, including hull integrity, paddle condition, and seat stability. Report any issues to staff immediately. Do not use a kayak that appears unsafe.
  2. Personal Flotation Device (PFD): A properly fitted PFD is mandatory for all paddlers. PFDs are provided and must be worn at all times during your paddle. Ensure the PFD meets local safety standards (e.g., AS 4758.1 in Australia).

  4. Speed and Control: Maintain a safe paddling pace suited to your skill level and the environment. Avoid sudden maneuvers or stunts that could lead to capsizing.
  5. Weather Conditions: Check weather forecasts before paddling. Avoid paddling in strong winds, heavy rain, or thunderstorms. Rough water increases the risk of capsizing.

Bike Riding Techniques

Biking Techniques Guide

Accessing the Bike

  • Mounting: No stress, it’s simple! Stand on the left side of the bike, hold the handlebars, and step over the frame with your right leg. Place your left foot on the pedal at its highest point, then push off gently to start.
  • Starting from a Standstill: If you’re starting from a stop, keep the bike steady with both feet on the ground, then push off with your dominant foot while pedaling with the other.
  • Dismounting: To get off, slow down, place both feet on the ground, and step over the frame to the left side—take your time!

Using the Pedals Correctly

  • Grip: Hold the handlebars lightly with both hands, thumbs around the grips, so you feel in control without tensing up.
  • Pedaling Technique: Push down on one pedal with your foot, then let the other foot follow in a smooth circle. Keep a steady rhythm—like riding a bike is a dance!
  • Power: Use your legs’ strength, not just your knees, to push the pedals, so you can ride longer without getting worn out.

Additional Techniques

  • Steering: To turn, lean slightly into the direction you want to go while turning the handlebars gently. Practice in an open space first!
  • Braking: If you need to stop, squeeze the brake levers smoothly—use both front and back brakes together to avoid skidding. Go easy to start!
  • Balancing: Keep your body relaxed and look ahead, not down, to stay balanced. If you wobble, put a foot down to steady yourself.
  • Shifting Gears: If your bike has gears, shift to an easier gear (lower number) for hills or a harder gear (higher number) for flat areas—give it a try and see what feels good!

This guide is effective as of 1:00 PM AEST on Monday, June 09, 2025.

Kayak Techniques

Kayaking Techniques Guide

Accessing the Kayak

  • Entry on Shore: Don’t worry, it’s easy! Place your kayak parallel to the water’s edge. Sit on the side with your legs inside, then gently slide into the seat while holding the sides to stay steady.
  • Entry from Dock: If you’re starting from a dock, line up your kayak perpendicular to it. Grab the dock with one hand, sit on the edge, and carefully swing your legs in while resting the paddle across your lap for balance.
  • Launching: Give a little push with your hands or paddle to get going, keep your PFD on, and use your hands to paddle at first until you’re comfy in your seat.

Using the Paddle Correctly

  • Grip: Hold the paddle with both hands about shoulder-width apart—don’t squeeze too hard, just keep your thumbs around it so it feels secure.
  • Stroke Technique: Dip one blade into the water near your feet, pull it back along the kayak using your body and arms, then lift it out near your hip. Switch sides each time to go straight—it’s like a fun rhythm!
  • Power: Use your tummy muscles to help push the paddle, not just your arms, so you don’t get tired too quickly.

Additional Techniques

  • Steering: To turn, try a sweep stroke—reach forward with the paddle and sweep it in a big arc toward the back of the kayak. Paddle a bit harder on one side if you need to adjust your path.
  • Bracing: If you feel wobbly, do a low brace—lay the paddle flat on the water and push down with the back of the blade to stay upright. It’s a lifesaver for beginners!
  • Stopping: To slow down, drag the paddle alongside the kayak with the blade in the water, or push the water forward with a backstroke—nice and easy!
  • Edging: If you want to turn better, gently tilt the kayak to one side (lean into the turn) while keeping your body in the middle. Take it slow at first!
