The Specific and General Details

Description
This round-trip bike ride starts and ends at the Wiseman’s Ferry picnic area, just a stone’s throw from the river. The first little stretch involves a bit of an uphill effort to get onto Singleton Road—it’s not too long, but it’ll get the legs ticking over. Once you’re on the road though, it’s smooth sailing. The route from there winds gently along the edge of the Hawkesbury, mostly flat, with wide river views and a wonderfully unhurried feel.
You’ll follow the road all the way to Spencer Retreat, a peaceful private property that marks the halfway point. It’s not open to the public, but it’s a great place to pause and turn around. Altogether, you’re looking at around 30km return trip —long enough to feel like you’ve done something, but gentle enough that it won’t leave you exhausted.
Along the way, especially during the warmer months, you might spot signs for local orchards offering fruit picking—like juicy stone fruit at Watkins Orchard or Ford’s Farm, both of which open their gates to the public when the trees are heavy with mandarins, oranges, or peaches (depending on the season). They’re well worth a detour if you’re riding at the right time of year.
Otherwise, there are plenty of chances to stop and take it all in—maybe a riverside breather, a coffee if you packed a thermos, or just a moment to spot a heron or two in the shallows. The road’s quiet, the scenery is lush, and the pace is entirely your own.
We call it the Laughtondale Linger because that’s what it’s all about—lingering. No rush, no race, just a laid-back ride through one of the Hawkesbury’s prettiest little pockets.

Weather affected bookings
Whilst Wisemans is seldom a worry, if the weather turns this can affect the activities.
- We watch the weather very closely. We have zero intention of putting anyone in harms way. So if we feel you may be at any risk whatsoever, we will advise you of our concerns. We also reserve the right to cancel your booking if we believe it is too risky. You can either choose a refund or reschedule.
- You can also change your booking to a Bike ride if the waters are a concern for some reason. Just chat to us and we'll sort everything out.
Our equipment
Whilst we endeavour to cater to everyone, it's not always possible to accomodate every shape, size or need. As our fleet grows, the availability of more options will arise.
- We have a combination of e-bikes and standard pedal bikes. Most are suited to an average size person. As you are not competing, this should suite most people.
- Bikes are maintained so users won't need to worry.
- Our bikes are only intended for general hybrid conditions (NOT for mountain biking!)
- Our Canoes are suitable for beginners to advanced social users and the type of water you'll find yourself on. They are regarded as safe and sturdy. No canoes are enclosed.
- Any protective gear such as helmets and lifejackets meet the required Australian standards.
Useful info
- The starting point of your adventure is not cast in stone. If you'd like we can look at alternative points within the local area. This will be dependent on distance and accessibility. We don't deliver across Webb's Creek Ferry. If you wish to, you can take the bikes on the ferry as part of your adventure.
- St Albans Road is beautiful but be aware of the additional traffic on this road.
- Routes along Settlers road to Spencer tend to be tougher as a result of increased traffic hence we recommend not opting for this route.
- Winter or Summer? Morning or afternoon? This route simply doesn't favour any. It offers unique elements no matter the season or time of day.
